I am again proud to have been selected by the local Labour Party to be the candidate for the local elections in May 2011. With my colleagues Councillors Mike Amesbury and Grace Fletcher - Hackwood, we have begun the process of visiting as many househilds as possible before May. Unlike the other political parties in our local community we campaign all year round.
Manchester people are being hit unfairly hard in the pocket by Tory/Lib Dem cuts that go too far and too fast:

- Cuts to child-care support will leave families up to £1,500 a year worse off

- January's VAT rise is costing families an average of £450 a year

- £9,000 university tuition fees and the scrapping of the Education Maintenance Allowance mean that fewer of our young people will get the chance of going on to further education

- Household energy bills - in addition to rising food and petrol prices - are set to rise by more that £300 a year.

- All of this on top of real cuts to the NHS, Police and Fire Services, Social Care and Welfare Benefits - cuts that hit our most vulnerable citizens

We want you to join with Manchester Labour to tell the Coalition Government that they are out of touch and out of date.
We promise to stand up for our communities.
We demand a fair deal for Fallowfield and a fair deal for Manchester.

Lib Dem Tory cuts go too far too fast

As details of the scale of Tory Liberal cuts emerge one thing is clear - this is an unfair attack on the North, with funding being switched from Labour controlled cities to affluent areas in the South. While Manchester faces huge and unprecedented cuts to jobs and services, places like wealthy Dorset have had an increase in funding.

And what have the Lib Dem Tory cheerleaders in Manchester got to say about it? According to Clegg & Cameron’s man in Manchester, Cllr Simon Ashley, this is a "fair settlement" for our City. To add insult to injury he claims to be “comfortable” with the pace and depth of the cuts!

Grace Welcomes Better Homes

Grace Fletcher Hackwood Labour candidate for Fallowfield today welcomed the progress in bringing Fallowfield social housing closer to the 2012 quality homes standard.

The 2012 quality home standard was a manifesto commitment by the previous Labour Government to ensure that every tenant had a decent home and environment to live in. Over £92 million was secured for the Fallowfield area which has helped to transform the local housing and environment.

Grace stated" I am proud that the Labour Party when in government was able to work with City South Housing Trust to deliver better homes for thousands of tenants in Fallowfield. If elected I will work with the Team at City South to ensure that this good work remains on track. I am of course concerned that this Lib Dem Tory Government has cut the future housing budgets by over 80% and now seeks to remove new tenants housing rights, reduce housing benefit support and put up social rents".

Better shops - a change you will see

Plans have been submitted for a retail and residential development which would breathe new life into Fallowfield Triangle.
Aldi and Great Places Housing Group, working closely with Manchester City Council, have made a planning application to create a new 1364 sq m store, 14 two-bedroom apartments and 10 three and four-bedroom houses.
The new food store would anchor the regeneration of the centre by increasing the number of visitors to the centre, supporting existing businesses and helping bring the vacant units back into use.
A car park for the centre, something which residents and traders have been calling for, would also be created as part of the scheme with 85 spaces.
The majority of people replying to a consultation carried out by Great Places and Aldi, which attracted almost 200 responses, were in favour of the plans.
The proposals focus on a 2.01 acre site bounded by Lloyd Street South, Hart Road and Platt Lane which currently contains St Crispin's church and social club and the UK Scaffold Yard.
Promising a "high quality, contemporary and modern" architectural design the new store and homes would complement the £1 million of environmental improvements which have been carried out to the Triangle in recent years. Further facelift work would take place to the back of shops along Platt Lane and Lloyd Street South as part of the plans.
Other investment in the Triangle area included last year's revamp of Fallowfield Library and new artwork at the corner of Platt Lane and Hart Lane based on designs by pupils at Wilbraham Primary School.

Local Councillor Mike Amesbury, said: "It's heartening that the investment which has already taken places in services and artwork to improve the area around the Triangle will be underpinned by this major scheme. Local people have been calling for improved shopping facilities for sometime and I'm proud that together with my Labour colleagues we are able to make this change happen"

While these elections are about who is best served to secure the economic recovery, of equal importance is the quality of the local environment. Graffiti, dumped rubbish, potholes and general neglect can bring a local community down resulting in increased crime and further anti social behaviour. Further to my previous post the graffiti vandal has struck again in the Whalley Range part of Fallowfield ward. The following acts of vandalism have been reported to be cleaned up.

Support Students

I do encourage both students and Labour supporters to sign up to the N.U.S. Votes for Students campaign. This aims to peg tuition fees at the current level of £3225. The Lib Dems policies on Higher Education funding are in disarray after several U Turns on abolition of Tuition fees. Labour have re-introduced grants for working class students which is a welcome step forward, together we need to ensure that we press any future government to freeze fees.

New BMX bikes - U Decided

Paid a visit to the local BMX youth club last night who were sporting five brand new bikes. The money was courtesy of the U Decide event where residents voted for what they deemed to be worthy community projects. The Olympic standard BMX track has gone from strength to strength and has proved to be a huge success with both local young people and world class BMX riders alike. I'm proud to have helped to secure the £300,000 facility in Platt Fields Park.

New Tot's Community Football Club in Fallowfield

Young people from across Manchester celebrated the launch of a new Football Club at the Platt Lane Complex this week, with a small sided football festival attended by Manchester’s City’s Patrick Vieira.
The event was a taster session for the recently established Platt Lane City FC - the city's newest Football Club for young people aged 5 years and above, which will create teams for all ages and abilities, including disabled teams.
Platt Lane City FC has been set up as a community football club, working towards the chartered standard award which is a sign of best practice for children involved, and has been established to give local children the chance to be involved with a local football club at minimum cost.
At the launch, the young players got to meet one of Manchester City’s latest signings, Patrick Vieira and club mascot, Moonchester, before being given the opportunity to play a series of short matches. The event gave the youngsters the chance to experience first hand the thrill of playing football in one of Manchester’s best training facilities. It also served as a great introduction to the new club.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, executive member for culture and leisure at Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester has a rich football heritage and we're keen to work with partners such as Manchester City Football Club and the Platt Lane Complex to provide as many opportunities as we can for our young people to play the game at the lowest possible cost.
"We have agreed to freeze all charges for all activities during 2010/11 to help local people during this challenging financial time and the club and council will also be investing in a new indoor playing surface in the Dome to ensure that we offer the best possible facilities for the players and our communities.
"This event was a great success and we hope the young people who took part so enthusiastically will keep playing football and keep coming back."

Happy 100 Platt Fields

As reported on the blog a couple of days ago, the launch of the Centenary for Platt Fields was held yesterday and was a tremendous success with around 70 people in attendance. I had the honour of making the opening speech as both as the Executive Member for Leisure as well as being a local Councillor. It was especially pleasing to introduce the honouree President of the Friends of Platt Fields, Sir Gerald Kaufman MP who made an excellent speech. Platt Fields goes back in time

Platt Fields Park will turn back the hands of time with the installation of a clock to the front of the boathouse for the first time in 50 years.
The unveiling will mark the official launch of the park’s centenary celebrations on Wednesday 17 February 2010, which will last throughout the year. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the curtains part and the handsome black and gold timepiece revealed. And, unlike the original (probably hand wound clock), this one will change the time automatically whenever the clocks change from winter to summer time etc.

It is believed that a clock face used to adorn the boathouse helping visitors with their timekeeping before it was removed sometime in the mid 20th century. It will now be reintroduced as a nod to the park’s great history and to mark the park’s journey forwards towards the next 100 years and local people and visitors are all welcomed to witness this historic occasion.
One local resident remembers: "The clock was used to teach us children how to tell the time. We’d be fishing for tiddlers and check when it was time for tea and get home sharpish so as not to annoy our mam."

The reintroduction of the clock to the park is a popular decision, welcomed by local residents, the Friends group and Manchester City Council alike.

Anne Tucker, Secretary of the Friends of Platt Fields Park said: "Putting the clock back on the boathouse’ was one of the first suggestions made by local people when we asked them how to celebrate the centenary. We have raised the money from donations and subscriptions from our members and other friends. And we are delighted that Sainsbury’s have offered a substantial grant towards its installation."

The history surrounding the original Platt Fields Park clock is sketchy with various theories about when it last kept time in the park. The Friends of Platt Fields would welcome any memories, details of dates, early photographs or any other information about the clock. Contact email@plattfields.org, or phone 248 9331.
The information could be used in a unique publication about the park and photographic exhibition at Platt Hall to mark the centenary, which is one part of a programme of events that the park has planned throughout the year.

Fallofield Councillor Mike Amesbury, (Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure) said: "Platt Fields Park is a Manchester gem and the history attached to it is something to be celebrated. We’re so proud that the park has reached this fantastic milestone and look forward to the next 100 years, as it continues to welcome local people and visitors from miles around to enjoy this special city centre park that has so much to offer everyone."
As part of the centenary celebrations, the Costume Gallery at Platt Hall will reopen its doors in March after a £1million makeover, and will include an exciting exhibition entitled 100 years of fashion, to link to the park’s anniversary. The year-long programme of events will include a special centenary weekend in May to celebrate the anniversary of the park’s opening on 7 May 1910.
The clock is being made by Smith of Derby, who have been clockmakers for over 600 years.
The clock will be unveiled at 12.30pm on Wednesday 17 February and everyone is welcome to attend.

U Decided

U Decide in it's third year in Fallowfield was a tremendous success ensuring that community projects that will really make a difference in the area got a slice of the funding cake.

Over forty people attended representing eleven groups that made a pitch amongst their peers to harness the necessary votes. Platt Fields Park projects, The Fallowfield Youth Forum and the Library Older Persons group were just three of the projects that were successful on the night. I am pleased that this event goes from strength to strength, and many wards are now following Fallowfield Labours lead. Even the Lib Dem candidate blessed us with his presence sporting lovely Lib Dem badges why the community got on with the serious business of improving Fallowfield.

Save Sure Start

Both the Tories and the Lib Dem's are focusing what they term "their savage cuts agenda" on children and families. Both relish the opportunity to abolish Child Trust Funds and erode Children's Tax Credits. The real choice at the next General Election will be between the Tory's and Labour, a vote for the Lib Dem's will ensure that we end up with a Cameron led Tory Government. A Tory government would also result in an outright assault on Sure Start, one of Labour most successful policies at helping children and young people. The new Children's Centre in my Ward of Fallowfield has been a tremendous success. Manchester Irish Club completes the treble in National Competition

The Palace hotel in Manchester erupted when St Kent’s Irish Club in Fallowfield, won its third national Club Mirror Award on Thursday 26 November. Last year it sweept the board by winning the ‘King of Clubs’ and ‘Manager of the Year’. This year it created its own unique piece of history by being one of the first clubs in the Country to win another national award by winning the title of ‘Community Pub of the Year’. The event was held in the prestigious Palace Hotel in Manchester and presented by TV horse racing pundit Clare Balding she described the winners as the nation’s best and congratulated them on all their success. Club Mirror has over 15,000 members throughout the UK and this is the sixteenth year that they have staged these National Awards for its members.

The Four hundred capacity venue which is one of Manchester’s top Irish entertainment and family orientated centres, won the coveted 2009 Club Mirror Award for ‘Community Club of the Year’.

Kevin Fitzpatrick the Fermanagh born manager of the club said “This is very special award because it rewards the work of the whole Parish Community. I have a great team here and everyone deserves the credit for winning such a prestigious award.”

St Kentigern’s Parish Priest Father Tom Connolly said “The whole community is delighted by the news, I am really fortunate priest to have such a vibrant club which caters for the needs of its members. This reward recognises everyone’s contribution to the success the club has in meeting the needs of the Irish community.”

Cllr Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure stated: “St Kent's is a real asset to both the Fallowfield and the Manchester community. From being a venue for community meetings & sporting hub to charity nights (and even my 40th) St Kent's is second to none”.

The club which was started in 1971 when it was built by the labour of the Irish parishioners and it has remained as a cornerstone of the Irish community in Manchester. It is a family orientated community and entertainment venue. Since its inception it has been one of the main hubs of Manchester’s Irish community while still making it accessible and welcoming to people of all different cultural backgrounds and faiths. The club is open seven days a week, where it hosts events for all different sectors of the community, these include: Special weekly Youth Club events, a Credit Union, Irish Language lessons, Traditional Irish Music tuition, Irish Set dancing. It is also home to the Keegan Kennedy School of Irish dancing and is one of the main sponsors of the the award winning Young, Gifted & Green Irish Music, Song and Dance Troupe.

The club itself has a national reputation for attracting a host of major Irish artists from all over the UK and Ireland. It has played host to the likes of The Wolftones, Big Tom, Bible Code Sundays, Philomena Begley, The Fureys, Mick Falvin, Declan Nerney, Susan McCann and TR Dallas to name just a selection of the acts.

During December the club will host the annual Christmas reunion of Manchester’s legendary Celtic Rock band ‘Toss the Feathers’ as well as a special outside broadcast of the award winning Full Irish Radio show with Joe Cassserley. The venue is also a great supporter of sport and sponsors a number of Gaelic Football and Hurling teams, as well as sponsoring and organising its own annual Charity Golf tournament.

Save our Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's)

As part of the great Tory takeaway pledge Chris Grayling the shadow home secretary has announced that he will seriously look at scrapping PCSO's if they win the next General Election. My Trade Union UNISON have already launched a campaign to protect these essential public servants, I and the Labour Party will be highlighting this issue over the coming months. Since the introduction of neighbourhood policing teams in my ward PCSO's have been invaluable in the fight against crime acting as the eyes and ears of the area. I am aware of dozens of crimes and incidents of anti social behaviour that they have dealt with as well as getting stuck into community projects that at times are beyond the call of duty. Residents sounded out on Triangle plans

Fallowfield residents are being invited to an exhibition to see proposals for a landmark scheme to help continue to revitalise Fallowfield Triangle and bring more jobs to the area.
Great Placing Housing Group and supermarket chain Aldi will be submitting a planning application to Manchester City Council next week for the Fallowfield Triangle, a shopping and business area which lies between Lloyd St South and Platt Lane.
The application will be twofold. Aldi is applying for a new 1364 sq m store and a secure community car park with 71 spaces. Great Places Housing Group has submitted proposals for nearly 30 new homes and apartments to rent or for sale.
The plans have emerged from a feasibility study commissioned by Manchester City Council to examine the future potential of Fallowfield Triangle which was carried out by the Great Places Housing Group.
Now, residents are invited to see and comment on the new plans for the area at an exhibition at Fallowfield Library, where Aldi staff will be able to talk about potential jobs and architects from Great Places Housing Group will answer questions about the proposed new homes. Improved homes for all.

As part of Manchester Labour's commitment to improve the basic standard of social housing by 2012, the Fallowfield investment programme is moving on a pace. Proud of Fallowfield Respect Fallowfield

Last week I joined the Neighbourhood Police Team, City South Housing Officers and the Street Environment Manager going door to door in Aston Avenue and Clinton Avenue, picking up residents concerns. We manged to speak to over 50% of households by doing repeat visits throughout the day. It was really heartening to hear residents stating that they felt that they had seen a reduction in anti social behaviour and they welcomed the increased visibility of the police with the introduction of PCSO's. As a result of resident feedback the S.E.M will be doing a clean up of the passageways on the estate as well as removing graffiti throughout Fallowfield.

There’s something for everyone at new-look Fallowfield Library

The newly re-furbished Fallowfield Library will be officially opened this week with a visit from the Bookstart Bear and a steel band.
Children from Wilbraham Primary School will also be treated to an art lesson as part of the re-opening with the chance to make their own pop-up 3D version of the library façade.

The refurbishment began in April and since then the library has been operating a reduced service from a single small room at the back of the building.

Now it has something for everyone from toddlers to teenagers and parents to pensioners. It’s been re-painted and re-carpeted and has a modern open-plan feel with a new enquiry desk. There’s a new teen section with study tables, a “lips” style sofa and a careers advice section. There are computer facilities, an ICT facilitator and a Homework Club.

There’s also a new children’s library area with additional seating, a sofa and rugs and the library has new comfortable seating throughout with coffee tables, newspaper stands, displays and information boards.

Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Mike Amesbury says: "The library is looking fresh and modern with enhanced facilities for everyone. There has been some disruption for staff and customers over the last couple of months and I'd like to thank them for bearing with us. Construction careers are the height of fashion

Local school children will improve their prospects for a career in construction after taking the hands on approach at the Gallery of Costume in Platt Hall, Platt Fields Park.
Platt Hall, which is owned and run by Manchester City Council, dates back to 1764 and houses the Gallery of Costume which has one of the leading costume collections in the UK; and features couture pieces from the likes of Dior, Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. It is currently closed for major refurbishment, so the careers’ day is a unique behind the scenes tour of the building works in progress for the lucky pupils attending.

The Grade II* listed building is currently undergoing a complete rewiring of the building, the renewal of the heating system, the installation of a large lecture/meeting room for students and visitors as well as the creation of new exhibition space to host temporary exhibitions.
The pupils will take part in interactive construction exercises hosted by Parkinson Building Contractors with the support of Manchester Chamber and Construction Skills to learn about how a heritage building project of this scale is carried out.

The Gallery of Costume is an extremely important to the city and Platt Hall is a significant part of the City’s architectural heritage. The Gallery was created in 1947, when Manchester City Council raised the funding to acquire a major private collection of costume, which was thus saved for the benefit of Mancunians and visitors to the city.
Added to over the last 60 years, it is now one of the largest collections of clothing and fashion accessories in Britain, containing over 25,000 items from the 17th century to the present day.
The one million pound investment being ploughed into the Gallery will enable it to open to visitors three days a week and make the collection more widely accessible. Work will be completed on the building in time for the park’s centenary celebrations next spring.

Agencies unite for Fallowfield Respect Action Days

Police teams, councillors, council officers, environment officers and City South Manchester housing officers all joined forces for two days of action in Fallowfield last Thursday and Friday. The event focused on crime prevention with high visibility patrols warning people about anti social behaviour,vehicle crime, and dumped refuge.

Over the two day period a total of 411 properties were visited, and 169 questionnaires were completed. 6 stop accounts were carried out, 1driving offences reported, 1 Stolen car recovered and a lot of high visibility re assurance patrol.

Fallowfield Councilor Mike Amesbury said;" Working together as one team, the council, police, community and other partners have achieved a great deal in just a couple of days. These Respect Fallowfield days gave residents and the opportunity to raise concerns and sent out a clear message that those breaking the law will be dealt with."

Funding setback won’t stop Alexandra Park

Cllr Mike Amesbury has confirmed that plans are still in place to improve the much loved park.
This follows news that Manchester City Council's bid to the HLF/BIG Lottery Parks for People Fund for a grant to restore Alexandra Park in Whalley Range has not been successful.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture & Leisure at Manchester City Council said: " This news is very disappointing not only for me but also the local community who love Alexandra Park and who have worked to help put the bid together, but it does not change Labours commitment to improve the park. We will continue to work with funding bodies and the communities around the park to achieve our plans".
The bid to restore the park was submitted in September last year to the Parks for People Fund, a joint initiative between the Heritage Lottery Fund and BIG Lottery and the City Council plans to resubmit the bid later in the year.
The plans for Alexandra Park, which are supported by a number of Sports Governing Bodies, include the reintroduction of sporting activity into the park, the reinstatement of the Park's Victorian pathways and other historic features, the reintroduction of flowerbeds and a programme of community activities and events involving other partner organisations to revitalise the park.
Alexandra Park sits alongside Princess Road two miles south of the city centre and is a listed Grade II landscape for its innovative design, the completeness of its layout, and the value of its remaining features. It was opened in 1870, after a competition to design the Park was won by the architect Alexander Hennell with the unusual feature of two, male and female, keep-fit areas. He also created a series of curved footpaths, around oval and circular areas catering for the fashion of 'promenading' by large numbers of people.

Free Swimming for young people all year round

Manchester Labour has ‘taken the plunge’ and opted in, providing under-16s and over-60s with free swimming all year round.

The Labour Government’s £140 million free swimming programme has been designed to extend opportunities to swim and to maximise the health benefits of wider participation in swimming. You can swim for free at any local leisure centre pool, including Wright Robinson Sports College.

In the same way Labour opened up access to our great museums and galleries, we are now extending this principal through to the performing arts.
We are unlocking seats that might otherwise have remained empty, providing great value for money for young people, and ensuring we open up theatre to as many people as possible.This new scheme sees Labour values in action. Labour has always believed in making the best in life available to everyone, so it’s incredibly exciting to imagine our theatres full to bursting point with young people. The Tories have already talked down the free theatre scheme on a number of occasions. This is typical of the Tories – when Labour introduced free entry into our museums and galleries the Tories opposed this and now, nearly 10 years later, they are still uncomfortable supporting a scheme that widens access to the theatre for young people.

Local group for older people

Older people are invited to join a brand new activity group at Fallowfield Library.
Beginning on Tuesday 13 January at 1pm, the group will meet each week and has been organised by Manchester Libraries and Age Concern Manchester.

The group is a fun and sociable way of meeting new people and trying new things and as many new members as possible are encouraged to come along.

Ideas gathered so far for future activities include local history workshops, reading groups, crafts, exercise, holistic health, visits to local landmarks, gardening, personal/home security advice, computer sessions and guest speakers.

Local resident Mrs Joyce Holliday said: "What a good idea to start a group. I hope it’s a big success and that I am free on the day of the meetings!"

NEW YEAR NEW IMPROVEMENTS TO MANCHESTER CEMETERIES

Over the last eight weeks, Manchester City Council’s cemeteries have undergone one of their biggest ever grounds maintenance improvement projects.
A team of over 20 people from Bereavement Services spent four weeks at Southern Cemetery, tidying shrubs and hedges and clearing paths.
The Council's workforce was supplemented by Community Payback teams who helped with many of the tasks that were being carried out.
Over the eight-week period over 2,500 trees were pruned with 200 tonnes of green waste being recycled.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, with a responsibility for cemeteries at Manchester City Council said: "When the grass has stopped growing at this time of the year it gives us the ideal opportunity to put our teams together and concentrate on carrying out improvement works that make the grounds within our cemeteries safer and more attractive places. It's a great team effort and the support we get from the Community Payback teams is of great benefit."

Manchester will be well represented at the Beijing Olympics next month, with ten local athletes making the grade to represent the country.
Ian Jones, Joe Murray, Shanaze Reade, Rebecca Romero, Vicky Pendleton, Jason Kenny, Rick Wadden, Natalie Jones, Simon Miller and Emma Kettle, will all be representing Great Britain alongside a number of other national squads who train in the city.
Councillor Mike Amesbury said: "On behalf of the city of Manchester, I would like to congratulate these athletes on what they have achieved by being selected to compete in the Olympic Games.
We are so proud that they will be representing not only their clubs and their city but their country as well, and I would like to personally wish them all every success in Beijing."
Although Water Polo isn't included in the Olympics this year, athletes representing the Manchester-based Great Britain team are also attending Beijing in preparation for the Olympic Games 2012.

THE BEST PARKS IN ENGLAND AND WALES

Manchester has been named as the lead authority in the country for the third year in a row, as 27 of its green spaces were placed in the list of best parks in England and Wales.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by the Civic Trust, is the national standard for parks and green spaces. Manchester Labour has ensured that it has maintained its top position by continuing to build on its success, after securing a further six awards this year.
Winners vary from Victorian parks and town centre gardens to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries.
Sites must meet the criteria of being welcoming, safe and well maintained, with a strong involvement from the local community.

Councillor Mike Amesbury backs Unite calls for windfall tax on energy companies

Unite the union, Britain's biggest union has today called for a windfall tax on energy companies and has branded their recent price hikes as excessive.
The union is warning that the latest round of price increases will damage British industry and hit the vulnerable, old and poor. According to Ofgem, power companies are in line for a £9 billion windfall from the European Emissions Trading Scheme. Coupled with the significant profits energy companies are making the union believes there is a strong case for the Treasury to levy a windfall tax to help the vulnerable struggling to pay their energy bills.
“There is a strong case for the government to levy a windfall tax on energy companies. By any standards these recent increases are excessive. Many of my constituents are already struggling to cope with fuel bills, these rises will have a detrimental effect on the vulnerable, old and poor.

Work starts on Manchester’s world class BMX track

I had the honour of being at the "digging of the turf ceremony" for the new BMX track in Platt Fields Park today. This will be yet another much needed youth facility for both Fallowfield and Manchester young (and not so young) people that residents of the Fallowfield ward have pressed for.

The BMX Track is being constructed by Manchester City Council in partnership with British Cycling Federation and Sport England, who have contributed £315,000 funding through the Community Club Development Programme. The track, which is due to be finished in April, will be home to the newly formed Manchester BMX Club who will deliver coaching, racing and practice sessions for local residents. Alongside the club, Manchester Leisure will manage the track, run drop in open sessions and specific Skills Training Sessions on weeknight evenings.
BMX Racing is a new Olympic discipline, with Great Britain having a genuine gold medal hope in Shanaze Reade. A current World Champion on the Velodrome as well as BMX, Shanaze will spend some of her training time at the Platt Fields track, providing a great motivation for local riders to follow in her footsteps.

Manchester City Council's executive lead member for culture and leisure, Councillor Mike Kane said: "After a lengthy design and consultation process the new track will cater for everyone from beginners to international racers. This track gives local residents of all ages an opportunity to sample bike racing in a safe and fun environment."
BMX Racing differs from freestyle and street riding, which many people will associate with today's BMX. In racing there is less emphasis on performing and more emphasis on getting through the obstacles and to the finish as quick as possible. Riders of any ability can safely ride around the track, regardless of their experience. The age range in BMX racing starts at 4 years old and has no upper limit, so it is a real family sport.

GUNS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

As reported in this evenings MEN Firearms were seized by police in Manchester today as part of a national day of action against gun gangs.
More than 250 officers with Greater Manchester Police swooped on the homes of suspected gang members and their associates.
In one of the early raids in Manchester, officers found a sawn-off shotgun in a shed at Fallowfield and a search of houses, gardens and backyards is expected to continue for most of the day.
Police have made 15 arrests, including three who were held on suspicion of possessing firearms or ammunition, and revealed two stashes of amunition.
Councillor Mike Amesbury stated" Both I and my colleagues are pleased that the police have taken this firm and decisive action. Guns should not be tolerated in any community and those individuals associated with gun crime will be removed from our streets".

The police were believed to be targeting around 50 suspected gang members and their associates, mostly based around Fallowfield, Moss Side, Stretford, Sale, and Gorse Hill.

Following the second gun related incident in Fallowfield in a two-month period local councillors are calling for more resources in the community.

Councillor Mike Amesbury stated: "In recent months we have seen a number of initiatives targeted at the areas of Hulme and Mosside to deal with the situation in these neighbouring communities. While we welcome theses resource for dealing with this issue citywide we are making a strong plea to add to focus to the Fallowfield Community.

Labour is taking real steps to promote hope and aspiration amongst young people by extending educational opportunities for all. In a highly competitive global economy, we have to make sure that all young people have the chance to meet their potential

The Education and Skills Bill does just that. For young people in Manchester, The Bill will raise the learning participation age from 16 to 18, so that every young person, regardless of their background, will have the right to stay in education or training until they are 18. This doest’t mean that young people will be forced to stay at school, but I do think that it will ensure young people think about their future. Young people will get a choice of how they want to be take part in education or training. Those that want to stay in school or college can do so. For others there will be a choice of work-based learning or attending college part time whilst working, massively extending the once popular Apprenticeship programmes.

Over 100 young people attended the Respect event in Platt Fields during the half term ( Thursday 25th ).

The day was organised by the Rusholme and Fallowfield Community Forum with the aim of consulting teenagers about what their ambitions are for the area and what services they would like from youth support agencies. Young people were able to take part in water adventure activities, bmxing, skateboarding and arts and crafts activities.

New figures showing employment is at a level of 29.1 million – the highest figure on record – have been welcomed by Cllr Mike Amesbury.The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance is down, while vacancies remain high at 668.8 thousand. Over 100 major employers have now committed to the Labour Government’s Local Employment Partnerships (LEPs), working with Jobcentre Plus to fast track long-term benefit claimants into work. Mike Amesbury said: “Today's vacancy figures, combined with the involvement of over 100 major companies in the LEP scheme, mean those who are able to work can find a job.“Those who ten years ago would have been left behind now have the chance to clock in, working for themselves and providing for their families."The challenge for us is to find new ways of helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to take advantage of these opportunities. The companies involved in LEPs have shown their commitment to British workers and we will give people the support they need to get into work."Our strong and stable economy has helped deliver record numbers in work and with unemployment continuing to fall we have in our sights the ambition of reaching full employment within a generation."

More Affordable & Social Housing

One of the most common issues that residents come to see me about is the lack of social and affordable housing. We simply do not have enough housing supply to meet demand.

I was therefore extremely pleased to hear that Yvette Cooper and Gordon Brown have promised a 50% increase in new social housing by 2011, and that they aim to meet Shelter's challenge of building an extra 20,000 a year soon afterwards.
All the evidence shows that homelessness and overcrowding have a devastating effect on the health, education and well-being of young children. If the extra homes that Labour has promised are delivered, we can begin to imagine ending bad housing for the next generation of children.
Even though this announcement is good news for those suffering at the sharp end of the housing crisis, there is already opposition to building new homes in some parts of the country. I strongly disagree with this.
I believe there are plenty of places for us to build the homes Britain needs, and that it is vital we do so. Careful planning can ensure that sustainable and mixed communities are created without concreting over the countryside.
We need to take on the NIMBY lobby. That is why I support Shelter in its campaign to ensure Manchester City Council support and deliver increased house building.

Lanterns, Fire and Fireworks at the Festival of Light

Hundreds of lanterns, a burning giant demon king and a fireworks finale will all light up a Mela to celebrate two of the most popular Hindu festivals, Dashehra and Diwali.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the family-friendly event in Platt Fields Park, Manchester, on Sunday 21 October.
Last year's Dashehra and Diwali Mela, the first held in Manchester, attracted more than 8,000 visitors, almost half of them from non-Asian backgrounds.
This year's event, organised by the Indian Association Manchester and supported by Manchester City Council, will run from 3.30pm to 9pm.
Fallowfield Councillor Mike Amesbury & Assistant Executive member for Arts and Leisure, said: "The Mela will be a wonderful opportunity for all communities to come together and celebrate the richness and diversity of Manchester. It will be a family event with something for every one."
The climax, starting at 8pm, will be the burning of a 30-foot-high effigy of the ten-headed demon king Ravan, who Hindus believe was killed by Lord Ram.
The burning of the effigy and the flames signify the ridding of the mind and soul of impurities ready for a renewal of the human spirit.
More than 300 children in schools all over Greater Manchester have been preparing lanterns for a lantern procession.
Live performances on stage will include Indian dances, Bollywood, Bhangra and other folk, fire dance, Indian Wedding Brass Band, and live music by the award winning best Bhangra band DCS.
There will also be art and craft (Henna and face painting, Rangoli and paper craft) and Indian dance workshops.
Throughout the evening visitors will be able to enjoy a fun fair and shop or enjoy a mouthwatering variety of delicious Indian food at over 30 stalls. The event will end with a brilliant fireworks display.
Dashehra and Diwali have religious significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. The festivals are celebrated by many communities in India and throughout the world. Both symbolise the power of good to triumph over evil. Diwali also marks the start of the Hindu New Year.

Fallowfield Votes Yes for Better Homes

Council tenants in Fallowfield, will share a £92 million home-improvement package after giving a 68.5% YES vote to Manchester Labour council's proposal to transfer ownership of council homes in the area to a new, not-for-profit 'social landlord' - - City South Manchester Housing Trust.

Councillor David Royle stated "Local tenants have voted overwhelmingly in favour of this transfer," Like them I am a local tenant that has been born and bred on the estate in Fallowfield" I will work together with City South Manchester to bring every home up to the decent standard. With this vote they have ensured a future for good quality affordable rented housing for the area. Rents will remain affordable, and tenants will keep all their important rights."

Following the successful ballot, the new housing trust will take ownership of the area’s council homes in Spring 2008 and improvement work is expected to start immediately after that.

Improvements will include:

new uPVC double-glazed windows,
external front and back doors if needed
fitted kitchens - if its over five years old
new bathroom suites, including a shower over the bath
rewiring where required
security lighting
upgraded heating systems where necessary

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Mega Mela staged in Platt Fields within the Fallowfield Ward.

Organisers have informed that over 100,000 people attended this two day event celebrating Asian culture. It was wonderful to see so many families from all walks of life having a good time.

Free Kylie

Cllr Mike Amesbury helped to launch "Kylie the exhibition" on Friday at the Manchester Art Gallery. The exhibit consists of Kylie's performance wardrobe and has been lent to Manchester by the Melbourne Arts Centre. This will be a free exhibition and will run until the 2nd September. Cllr Amesbury said" I encourage as many Fallowfield residents and Mancunians to attend and see this wonderful piece of popular culture"

A Better Shopping Parade

An Environmental improvement programme will begin on the Fallowfield Triangle shopping parade in September of this year.

The work will include new paving stones, ornamental street furniture including new lighting and new shop frontages.

Labour candidate Peter Morrison is urging residents to go along to what promises to be a great St George’s day parade this year.

The Parade leaves Nicholas Varley School, Miles Platting at 12noon and will make its way into Piccadilly Gardens at approximately 12.30pm.
Included in this years parade are: Knights and Damsels from Nicholas Varley School, Veterans and cadets from the Armed Forces, several bands including Brass, Pipe, Jazz, Steel and Samba to name a few. We will also see The Sealed Knot (English civil war re-enactment group) Clan of the Dragon (Viking re-enactment group), Belly Dancers, English Shire Horses including National Champion Titan, Rose Queens from around Manchester and of course St George, Henry VIII and Queen Victoria will also be there.
With over 700 people participating in the Parade, and estimated crowds to be in the thousands, it promises to be an exciting and colourful event.
On the Friday and Saturday 20th / 21st April there will be an English Themed Market in Piccadilly Gardens.

Cllr Mike Amesbury , has said that the publishing of the 2007/08 council tax rates clearly show that Labour councils offer the best value for money.
"Labour councils cost local residents on average £262 per year less than Tory controlled councils and £201 less than Lib Dem councils.
"And thanks to Labour's consistent investment in local government, and prudent management of city council finaces, the rise will be the lowest rise in Greater Manchester for the eighth year running.

In neghbouring Lib Dem controlled Stockport the rise is close to double that of Manchester.

Budget summary - Building Britain’s long-term future: Prosperity and fairness for families

Gordon has delivered again, a Budget that sets out increases in spending on public services; increases education spending to its highest ever levels; reforms the tax system to reward work, supports families with children, and takes 600,000 pensioners out of income tax. A bold Labour budget for a soon to be bold Labour Prime Minister.
Key announcements

Further support for families, by increasing the child element of the Child Tax Credit by £150 a year, over and above the commitment to increase it in line with earnings to the end of this Parliament. This raises the child element to £2,080 a year lifting 200,000 children out of poverty;

Increasing the threshold for the Working Tax Credit by £1,200 to £6,420 to improve work incentives;
So almost £2 billion extra is being invested in tax credits in this Budget;

Child Benefit will rise in three stages to £20 per week increasing faster than inflation. Child Benefit which was £575 a year in 1997 will by 2010 be over £1,000;

Education spending will rise to £90 billion by 2010-11 the highest ever level, increasing UK education spending from 4.7 per cent of GDP in 1997 to 5.6 per cent by 2010-11;

An increase in pensioner tax allowances taking 600,000 pensioners out of paying income tax;

The basic rate of income tax cut from 22 pence to 20 pence from April 2008 with the 10 pence starting rate removed; Simplifying the tax system by aligning the upper earnings limit for national insurance with the higher rate threshold and over indexing both to avoid people losing out

The headline corporate tax rate will be cut from 30 per cent to 28 per cent from April 2008 together with other significant reforms to the corporate tax system;

Measures to encourage energy efficiency and tackle climate change including an increase in fuel duty rates from 1 October 2007; and increasing Vehicle Excise Duty on the most polluting cars, while cutting it for the less polluting;

Extending the Financial Assistance scheme from its present budget of £2 billion to a total of £8 billion so that every one of the 125,000 workers will now receive help. Reporting later this year we will investigate, in full, the assets within the affected schemes and how we can use them further to support affected pensions.

Tree clearance following January storms

Over the last few weeks residents have been in touch with me and my colleagues in regards to a number of trees uprooted due to the severe storms in January.

The high winds caused extensive damage and toppled more than 2,000 trees in approximately 800 locations across the city. Five aboricultural teams of three men have been working tirelessly since January to sort out the problem which has been immense in scale and which will take sometime to clear.
As well as clearing the fallen and dangerous trees as a result of storm damage the aboricultural emergency call out teams also provide a service 24/7, 365 days a year for the city responding to calls within two hours to remove dangerous trees.
Councillor Amesbury, said: "We are still faced with an enormous back log of tree clearing following the January storm and the teams who are working full time are doing a tremendous job, while still providing an emergency service".
The chippings from the trees are used for a variety of purposes on paths, mulching beds in parks and for landscaping work across the city.

100 DAY CHALLENGE

A CLEANER FALLOWFIELD

I, Cllr Peter Morrison, Cllr David Royle, the city council clean team and the new PCSO's got our hands dirty as part of a clean up of the Fallowfield Brow area. The Clean up was in response from a call to action by the newly formed Neighbourhood Watch group in Fallowfield Brow.

The new Police Community Support Officers did a house to house door knock and leaflet drop to promote crime prevention and litter enforcement measures.

Cllr Peter Morrison stated: "This is not a one off isolated measure but the start of a concerted effort to encourage a sense of community responsibility to many of these households that have a large number of student tenants. We will also encourage Landlords to take more care of their properties using both gentle persuasion and where necessary the law".

A number of residents thanked the volunteers and staff for their fruitful efforts.

BMX Track approved for Platt Fields Park

The submitted plans for the proposed BMX site on the disused shingle tennis courts and surrounded area ( that suffers from flooding ) have been approved by the Planning Committee. Do keep an eye on the Friends of Platt Fields website for more information. http://www.plattfields.org/bmx.htm

The Friends of Platt Fields Park AGM - The BMX Track Debate

I, Cllr Peter Morrison,(pictured) Cllr David Royle, Sir Gerald Kaufman MP and over 40 Friends members attended a lively and informative AGM celebrating the success of the group and re-electing the committee for the forthcoming year. Following Cllr Morrison's move to extend the consultation period over the proposals to construct a BMX track, people are able to have their say upto March the 15th. Feedback from Saturday's debate will be fed into the consultation process.

Traffic Calming for Kingsbrook and Kings Road Whalley Range

My colleague Cllr Peter Morrison alongside Cllr Mary Watson and Labour campaigner Kath Fry have successfully pressed the council to draw up a traffic calming scheme for Kingsbrook and Kings Road.

Cllr Peter Morrison stated: "Residents in this area of Whalley Range have been lobbying me and my Labour colleagues for sometime. Over eight collisions have occurred at the junction of Kingsbrook and Withington Road, cars drive at ridiculous speeds in this residential area and it has become rat run".

The draft scheme is part of a broader road safety initiative in the area to ensure that accidents at the junction of Wilbraham Road and Withington Road are reduced.

Who’s Kidding Who?

The most unprincipled opportunistic political party to walk this earth has surpassed it's usual hypocrisy in its latest leaflet hitting the streets of Manchester Gorton. It now seems that Lib Dem Cllrs Jackie Pearcy and some other one whose names escaped me are claiming they are opposed to road pricing. Well I think they need to speak to their own leadership team in Westminster ( including Junior shadow transport spokesperson John Leech MP) and the rest of their Lib Dem colleagues throughout the North West (including your own leader in Manchester Cllr Simon Ashley).
Just to remind the rather forgetful Lib Dem Councillors in Gorton North here are some useful quotations from their own colleagues and their policy documents.

Better housing for Fallowfield - See for yourself

Councillor Peter Morrison is encouraging tenants to visit the newly opened show home at 191 Wilbraham Road.
Speaking at the launch Cllr Morrison stated, “over the coming months tenants will continue to be consulted on the proposals to create a local not for profit housing company called City South Manchester. The show home will give tenants an insight into the level of investment that can put into homes through the new housing company".

Action for Fallowfield Library

Following a spate of anti social behaviour incidents we are working together with Manchester Libraries, the Police and the Crime and Disorder Team to deal with a small minority of youths who were intent on causing trouble.
As reported in last weeks South Manchester Reporter the anti social behaviour included racist threats towards door staff and an alleged assault.

A number of youths have been identified and will be banned from the library with immediate effect.

All CCTV images are being reviewed by the police.
The newly appointed Police Community Support Officers will have a strong presence in the area.

Anti Social Behaviour legislation will be applied to both the culprits as well as the parents and carers.

Cllr Peter Morrison said: "this is a well used resource and community facility, we are determined to ensure that this small minority of young people are dealt with firmly for the benefit of decent library users".

Better Education - Wilbraham Primary Success

Wilbraham Primary School has hit the top ten as one of the fastest improving
schools in the country.
Cllr Mike Amesbury stated: "This is wonderful news for the pupils and teaching staff at the school, I commend the dedication of the Head Teacher Tim Hatcliffe and his team ".
The Government League Tables rank schools across the country according to the proportion
of youngsters who achieve level four or higher at Key Stage 2 tests. The school was placed eighth in the League
Table.

Manchester MP's should speak up for Manchester

Not content with talking down our schools and teachers, criticising the Police with debatable figures on crime, John Leech MP is now poo pooing the decision to locate the Super casino in East Manchester. I suppose he is at least being consistent with his opposition to major regeneration projects.The Lib Dems opposed the Commonwealth Games, the regeneration of Exchange Square and now the creation of at least 2,700 jobs in East Manchester.

Crime down in Fallowfield

At our last Local Area Partnership meeting the Police gave councillors and local residents an update on the latest crime figures for our area. Robbery, burglary,vehicle crime and anti social incidents were all significantly down when compared with this time last year.
Some notable arrests have been made which has had a major impact on the reduced figures. The Respect pilot with its multi agency approach and additional police hours undoubtedly had a positive effect. My colleague Cllr David Royle is leading the charge to get a permanent Respect Fallowfield initiative.

A number of constituents emailed me (or generally grabbed me in the street) to protest at the ill conceived idea to extend car parking charges in the city( up to to midnight weekdays and all day Sunday ). Your protest didn't go unnoticed and forced a rethink , which goes to show that Manchester Labour does listen.

BMX Track for Platt Fields Park

I have given my support in principle to plans to build a national standard BMX track in a disused area of Platt Fields Park. Two of the biggest issues highlighted by local residents in the ward have been anti social behaviour closely followed by lack of youth facilities. The two are in my opinion interlinked so I welcome any proposals to offer positive activities for young Mancunians.
The proposals are out for consultation at the moment and must of course go through the planning process, a prerequisite of my full support is to maximise free access to young people and ensure that the site is secure causing minimum disruption to local residents.
